2020 March for Life D.C.
By: Gary Merritt -
Thu, Jan 30, 2020 3:30 AM
This past weekend the Michigan State Council and wives traveled to Washington D.C. for the 47th Annual March for Life which took place on Friday January 24th, 2020. This year’s theme was “Life Empowers – Po- Life is Pro-Woman”.
When we arrived, Fr. Aidan Logan, Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Military Services greeted us at the Army Navy Club for breakfast in preparation for the March. We then traveled to the National Mall where we joined the largest crowd of any of the Marchs for Life.
For the first time in the history of the March our President and Commander in Chief, Donald Trump attended and spoke at the March for Life, stating, "We are here for one reason and that is to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to full fill their God given potential". The President also stated that born and unborn children are all created in HIS Image and Likeness and that God will prevail. To view the President’s address click here.
President Trump was joined by Katrina Jackson, Ann Wagner, Chris Smith, Melissa Ohden and Claire Culwell, along with final remarks from President of March for Life Jeanne Mancini.
We also had the opportunity and privilege to meet our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson just before the beginning of the March.
Friday evening and Saturday were left for sightseeing in and around our nation’s capital. On Saturday afternoon attended Mass at St. John Paul II National Shrine which is always an honor and incredible experience.
If you have not made the pilgrimage to the March for Life you should consider joining us next year. Watch the www.mikofc.org website for information to come later this year.

Adopt-a-Parish in Mideast
By: Gary Merritt -
Sat, Jan 25, 2020 3:30 AM
My Brother Knights, As many of you may know, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson announced a new Adopt-a-Parish initiative for the Order during his remarks at the Supreme Convention.
|
The need for our Christian brothers in the Middle East is great. Years of persecution, war and international conflict have severely diminished the Christian population, ignored basic human dignity and promoted a culture of death. As Knights, we have the opportunity to assist our persecuted brothers and create a culture of life.
Participating councils are asked to pledge $2,500.00 a fraternal year for two years, during which they receive contact information for their adopted parish priest. All participating councils that meet their yearly commitment can count the Adopt-a-Parish initiative as two credits for Life programs towards their Columbian Award. Councils unable to make the two-year commitment can receive one credit for Life programs by hosting a fundraiser and making a donation to one of their neighboring councils’ Adopt-a-Parish initiative.
|
There are 15 Catholic parishes in Iraq who still are in need of a Knights of Columbus partner, and adopted parishes will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. Every council that participates receives a free fundraising webpage which enables them to receive debit and credit card donations from brother Knights, family and the local community.
To express interest or sign up for the Adopt-a-Parish initiative, please contact Evan Holguin, Coordinator of Faith Programs. He can be reached by email at Evan.Holguin@kofc.org or by phone at (203) 752-4164.
We thank you for your help in promoting this important initiative, which brings much needed support and fraternity to our persecuted brothers in Iraq.
Combined Degree in the News

After 142 years, the Knights of Columbus is pulling down a veil of secrecy that has surrounded its initiation ceremonies in an effort to better showcase the order’s core principles and its drive to help Catholic men become disciples.
But beginning in 2020, the Knights have adopted a new ceremony, called the Exemplification of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, combining the initiation for their first three degrees into a single ceremony that will be open to family, friends and fellow parishioners.

KC Hall Houses Residents After Fire

Residents of The Brook evacuated following minor fire
WEST BRANCH — The Brook of West Branch retirement community was evacuated around 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 due to a fire in the building’s D wing, according to West Branch City Police Chief Ken Walters. There were no injuries reported.
The fire was reportedly started by a resident suffering from dementia.
“It was a cardboard box with a lid on fire in the hallway in D wing, and it tripped the sprinkler heads, which flooded out a bunch of rooms,” Walters said.
There was no fire damage to the building, however, a reception center was set up at the West Branch Knights of Columbus hall to temporarily house residents whose rooms were affected by the sprinklers being tripped.
Matt Keeton The Ogemaw Councty Herarld
January 6, 2020
To;
Grand Knight Rick Leibler KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Ogemaw Council #2022 West Branch, MI
Dear Grand Knight Leibler,
Late at night on Saturday, December 28, The Brook Nursing facility experienced a fire incident requiring over 50 residents be evacuated and transported to a suitable shelter. That cold and weathered night, your K OF C Council, and Brother Knights came to the immediate rescue of the most vulnerable and frightened residents of The Brook, most likely while most has already been in bed for the night.
Your fellow Knights immediately sprang into action to open the Knights of Columbus hall, prepare it to accommodate patients that needed the most tender care, awoken from their sleep, and moved out quickly. One can only imagine how frightening this would be for each patient, it was a cold, bad weather night. While our local emergency managers, law enforcement, EMS, 911, and Fire Department assisted on site, your fellow Knights opened your arms in welcome to these vulnerable elderly patients. I imagine that your Knight members likely knew several of the patients and believe that brought them comfort in seeing familiar faces.
We are told this is at least the second time that the Knights have assisted the patients of The Brook due to an evacuation emergency. We understand that the Red Cross also assisted at the rescue site and, in addition, at the Council Building.
On behalf of the City and West Branch City Council, we are so appreciative of what the Knights of Columbus were able to do on both occasions. The Knights and your leadership at the State and National level need to be aware of what you did and of our heartfelt thankfulness. As God’s children, you took in and offered shelter to the most vulnerable of our elderly residents.
Often times in the rush to respond to a crisis and the aftermath, we forget to thank and highlight the exceptional efforts of volunteers and organizations that contribute so much.
Grand Knight Rick Leibler, the Council 2022 and its brother Knights are owed a debt of gratitude. You have much to be proud of.
Very Sincerely and most Gratefully,
Paul Frechette, Mayor of West Branch
Frank Goodroe, City Manager
