2019 Posen Potato Festival
By: Gary Merritt -
Tue, Sep 10, 2019 7:30 PM
South Dakota has Sturgis, Wisconsin has Oshkosh and Northeast Michigan has Posen. All three small towns experience a growth in population due to an annual event: Motorcycle Rally, AirVenture Show, and a Potato Festival, respectively.

Held annually the weekend after Labor Day, the Posen Potato Festival is fun for the whole family. Good food, good music, carnival, arts & crafts, plus much more. The grand parade is always on Sunday. This year our State Deputy Bill Chasse and our First Lady Marybeth were invited by Fr. Casimir Szyper Council 6657 to ride on their float.
Bishop's Golf Classic 2019

Meet the Diocese of Lansing seminarians who will benefit enormously from this year’s Bishop’s Golf Classic fundraiser played at the Eagle Eye Championship Golf Course and adjacent Hawk Hollow Golf Course, Lansing, 19 August 2019.
“The Diocese of Lansing has been blessed with an increased number of seminarians in recent years but that requires a very welcome increase in demand for financial support for seminary education,” explained event organizer, Matt Hufnagel, Vice President of Development with the Diocese of Lansing Catholic Foundation.
“That’s why we are extremely grateful to the increased number of golfers who participated in this year’s Bishop’s Golf Classic as well as the event’s very generous sponsors and donors who helped to make the day such a happy, enjoyable, successful occasion – and all in support of the very worthy cause of seminary education.”
In total, 200 golfers participated in this year’s Bishop’s Golf Classic, an increase of more than 10% on last year. The event was hosted and supported by the Knights of Columbus Councils of the Diocese of Lansing.
The day began with a prayer and blessing imparted by Bishop Earl Boyea. He then toured the two golf courses to meet, greet and thank participants for their support and generosity.
Also taking to the courses throughout the day were 22 of the Diocese of Lansing’s 24 seminarians who were similarly keen to express gratitude to those taking part in the fundraising event. In total, the diocese has two more seminarians than last year, and three more enrolled in major seminary this year than last.
The day concluded with a reception and dinner in the Eagle Eye Banquet Center during which each of the students for the priesthood were introduced by Father John Whitlock, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Lansing. Bishop Boyea then oversaw the presentation of prizes to the winners of the day’s various golfing competitions before appropriately concluding proceedings with a blessing.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The summer is nearing an end, the kids are going back to school and it is time to get ready for the State of Michigan Special Olympics Fall Games. As you can see in the picture, the excitement of the athletes for the games never diminishes.
The Fall Games will be held on September 20-22, 2019.
Over a dozen different events will take place in Ann Arbor, Canton, Chelsea and Ypsilanti. For detailed information, go to https://www.somi.org/
So, what can the Knights do? Many of you have attended the Opening Ceremonies for the summer games and saw first hand how important these ceremonies are to the athletes. All Knights from across are invited to the Fall Games Opening Ceremonies. The ceremony will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 beginning at 7:30 pm at the Ann Arbor Sheraton, lo-cated at 3200 Boardwalk St., Ann Arbor, MI 48108. I would encourage you to do a couple of things. First, arrive early (about 6:30 pm) and mingle with the athletes, they love the Knights of Columbus and appreciate seeing us there.
Secondly, wear your MI Drive vests and bring some Tootsie Rolls to hand out. We are well recognized for the MI Drives by the athletes and coaches. |
 |
Lastly, plan on staying after the ceremonies for a while. Meet some more of the athletes and if you’re brave enough join them in dancing and celebrating life.
All Color Corps from Across the State are invited to participate in the open-ing ceremonies. Color Corps, please be at the Ann Arbor Sheraton by 6:30 pm for instructions for the evening.
Several Councils have already volunteered to help serve lunch during the Soccer Competition on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Independence Park in Canton (1898 Denton Rd., Canton). Food prep will be starting at 8:00am. If your council would like to help please contact me at 248-420-0135 or email me at j.hundiak@mikofc.org.

International Community Award Winner Council 10992
By: Gary Merritt -
Wed, Aug 14, 2019 7:30 PM

In 2007, Knights from Holy Family Council 10992 began sponsoring a small event welcoming local high school students with special needs to their own “prom.” The first event hosted 12 students and continued to grow much larger in the years to come. The prom is now held twice a year at Sparta High School and all students with special needs can attend at no charge. The bi-annual event now attracts 1,600 guests with special needs from across Michigan. As many as 200 volunteers, most of whom are members of Council 10992, assist with the months of planning, preparation and execution for each event, including: volunteering for check-in, buffet service, developing themes and decorating, event security and clean-up, waiting tables, and serving as trained medical staff. The council also ensures that every attendee receives the full prom treatment: contracting a limousine service to offer free rides and working with local hair and makeup stylists and formal-wear vendors to provide free services.
Faith in Action: Community Helping Hands
By: Gary Merritt -
Mon, Aug 12, 2019 7:30 PM

Higher Purpose
Put your faith into action and help those less fortunate in your
community. In the model of Knights of Columbus founder,
Venerable Michael McGivney, councils will lead efforts to assist
those most in need. Guidelines for this program are broad and
can include forming partnerships with local aid organizations or
independently planning unique activities.
Overview
The Helping Hands program is designed to recognize the
important work many councils already do to care for the most
disadvantaged members of our communities – the homeless, the
addicted, the elderly who may feel isolated and abandoned, and
many others. Through this program, councils will aid the needy
through the activities they feel best suit their community, such as
serving at or running a soup kitchen, repairing the facilities of a
local service organization or something entirely unique. The
requirements for this program are very broad in order to allow
councils to serve their community in whatever way is most
needed.
Required Program
A council must conduct this required program in the Community
category to be eligible to receive the Columbian Award.tion Stepses
